Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 August, 2011 : - - The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s (DLSA) annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic & Luau date has been selected. After twenty plus years of successfully predicting the optimum swell and tide opportunities, the club has selected this year’s Dale Velzy Classic to be held on (Saturday) September 17th, 2011 at the legendary “Boneyard” section of Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California.

Open to everyone who loves waves, the beach, good times, and great food, the event honors one of surfing’s most famous surfboard shapers of all time - “Dale Velzy” who passed away in 2005. This is a very special program for the DLSA, as the club has been holding this Classic venue for over two decades.

The Velzy Classic is designed for all who enjoy the same things that Dale enjoyed, mostly having fun with family and friends. It is in that spirit that the DLSA holds this annual event, so that everyone can enjoy a full day of great activities such as the surf contest, the luau, Polynesian Dance Review, and dancing under the stars to the live band “ The Eliminators”.

“This 22nd edition of the Velzy Surf Classic & Luau has a very special place in the hearts of all Doheny Longboard Members. Dale Velzy was an important person to all of us in the club and this program is our yearly tribute to one of the true pioneers of the sport of surfing” said Mark Calkins, DLSA’s President.

The Eliminators history is also very unique, as they were formed over twenty years ago out of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association in the early 90’s. The band members are all longtime Orange County surfers who were brought together through common interests; surfing, the love and respect for the ocean, and the desire to bring the authentic sound of the early 60’s surf bands back to the forefront
of the music industry.

This year’s event kicks off with the Classic Surf Contest at 6:30 a.m.. The Luau festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. with a “meet and greet”, followed by an awesome Hawaiian style dinner, the Polynesian Dance Review, awards ceremony, raffles, and then on to dancing under the stars till 9:30 p.m..

Jeffrey "Jeff" Hakman is an ex-world surfing champion and multi millionaire founder of clothing giant Quiksilver.

Hakman started surfing in 1956 at age eight in Palos Verdes, California and at the age of ten moved to Hawaii with his parents. He surfed Waimea Bay at fourteen years old and at seventeen won the prestigious surfing title, Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. Hakman graduated from Punahou School in 1967.[1] From twenty-one to twenty-seven he won the most major surfing titles in the world including the first Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline, 1976 Bells Beach and was the unofficial World Champion in 1974 and 1975.[citation needed]

In 1976 Jeff founded Quiksilver America with Bob McKnight and in 1984 founded Quiksilver Europe with Harry Hodge, Brigitte Darrigrand and John Winship. He is currently the Marketing Director for NaPali SA (Quiksilver) in France. He is a 2009 inductee into the Surfers' Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, California.

2011 Gathering of the Tribes Surf Contest Comes to a Close

SAN ONOFRE, Calif. -The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s (DLSA) annual Gathering of the Tribes surf contest has come to a close. The 3 day program had over 370 competitors in what is now the largest surfing contest on the west coast.

The surf-filled days encompassed all aspects of surfing from tandem, SUP, shortboarding, and longboarding. Amateurs and Pros surfed together in their heats to get into the hard fought finals. In addition, the International Tandem Surfing Association’s World Championships were held in conjunction with this year’s program.

The DLSA is a member of the Coalition of Surf Clubs that help raise awareness and support for variety of causes such as saving our wetlands, surf breaks, and beaches for future generations to enjoy in a clean and natural environment.

Mark Calkins, this year’s event Director, stated, “We were blessed with good surf in the mornings and afternoon in the waist to shoulder high range. A south wind made surfing more challenging in the mid-morning to early afternoon. The weather was cool, for the event but the action in and out of the water was hot”.

The Gathering event starts the Coalition of Surf Clubs seven-contest season. Teams from the San Diego to Northern California came and gave it their all. Individual contestants came from as far away as France, Florida, and Hawaii. The DLSA would like to thank the 19 clubs that attended and all the DLSA club members and Coalition members that helped make this year’s event a success.

The Coalition of Surfing Clubs (CSC) is an international organization that represents the interests of surfing clubs throughout California and the world. It acts as a united voice to address issues related to coastal water quality, beach access, development, and legislative policy. The Coalition represents more than 10,000 surfers, of all ages, and exists for the betterment of the citizenship of the surfer, to improve clean water locally and globally and to promote the sport of surfing.

SAN ONOFRE, Calif. –The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is all set to produce the first classic winter surf event of 2011. This year’s program will be held in conjunction with the Tandem Surfing's I.T.S.A. World Championships. This is the first time in history that a world title tandem surfing event will take place on mainland, USA.
The weather looks like it’ll corporate by the weekend and all systems are set to go.
The event will offer spectacular competitive surfing with age groups ranging from kids to seniors with two contest zones at the legendary point surf of Church Beach at San Onofre, California. The number of competitors traditionally makes this the largest competitive 2-day longboard event on the west coast.

Presented with Anna Trent Moore (Anna is big wave legend Buzzy Trent's daughter and was caretaker and longtime friend of film maker Bud Browne) the movie takes the viewer to the birth of big wave surfing in the early 1950's through the short board evolution. It is a heart rendering journey that reminds us that some things can never be taught...only remembered.
Composed of historical footage taken by the late Bud Browne that has not been seen in years, the film is classic surfing at its best! Also on board for this special evening is a book signing by Anna Trent Moore of Increments of Fear. This is the story of the human endeavor for perfection, and the failures intertwined in the journey. Poignant, brutally honest, and provocative, it sheds insight into one of surfing's most intriguing and charismatic characters, Buzzy Trent. Photography is again provided by the late Bud Browne. Surfing Heritage Foundation to Hold Longboard Collector Club Meeting and Swap Meet

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., October 14, 2010 - The Surfing Heritage Foundation is proud to hold the Longboard Board Collector Club’s monthly October meeting at the Surfing Heritage’s main archive in San Clemente on Saturday, October 23rd from dawn till noon. The Longboard Collector Club is an organization comprised of serious collectors, looking to buy, sell or trade vintage boards, books, and other items related to the surfing lifestyle. The program is free and open to the public. If you have any surfing related collectables you are welcome to join in.

The event will also feature renowned author, Matt Warshaw, who will be signing his latest book, “The History of Surfing” from 10 a.m. till noon. Warshaw also wrote The Encyclopedia of Surfing, “Surf Movie Tonite! Surf Movie Poster Art, 1957 -2005”, the Ron Stoner book and was managing editor of Surfing magazine from 1985 to 1990.
Additionally, the Surfing Heritage’s showroom will be open to the public featuring the world’s largest collection of wood surfboards and other items from surfing’s past. Dick Metz, the Heritages co-founder stated, “We are always excited to see the Longboard Collector Club here at the Foundation; they continually bring something that no one has seen for years that represent a rare piece of surfing’s history. It’s a great group of individuals that truly take surfing’s history to heart”.

The Three Amigos now at the Surfing Heritage Foundation

Three new surfboards are on display in our hallway at the Surfing Heritage Foundation. The boards, known as the Three Amigos, were donated by Founding and Sustaining Partners, Nick & Terri Bacica. They were recently delivered by Wingnut on one of his southward journeys. The new boards are replicas of surf legends; "Lorrin 'Whitey' Harrison's, Doc Ball's and Leroy Grannis' boards that they used to ride. Greg Noll (himself a pioneer as well) recreated these incredible surfboards. "Lorrin 'Whitey' Harrison's surfboard was the most advanced," says Greg. "Fairly narrow in the stern with a vee-bottom tail for riding more critical waves." Leroy Grannis' board was made of solid merch redwood (from the outer bark ring). Doc Ball's board was carved from a solid slab of redwood with a copper Hawaiian shield mounted on the deck. The Duke Kahanamoku Surfing Reserve

Governor Linda Lingle today issued an executive order to establish surfing reserves at two of Hawai‘i’s most important and well-known surfing areas. The executive order “acknowledges the cultural, sports and historic significance of important surf sites in Hawai‘i,” and “raises public awareness about the importance of protecting, nourishing and developing Hawai‘i’s world famous surf sites."
The Governor’s order establishes the Duke Kahanamoku Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks bounded by the Ala Wai and the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium, as well as the North Shore Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks from Ali‘i Beach in Hale‘iwa to Sunset Beach. Both surf reserves are located off the waters of O‘ahu.

The sightings are true. Every spring at Doheny State Beach, Menehunes are waking up from their long winter naps and are beginning to surf again at Doheny Beach. What’s all the ruckus about? They are simply getting ready for the 14th Annual Doheny Longboard Surfing Associations Menehune Surf Championships scheduled for June 26th.

The contest begins promptly at 7 AM and is open to boys and girls (menehunes) with divisions 8 and under up to 17 years of age. Hundreds of young competitors are expected to participate. "The annual Menehune contest provides the perfect venue for kids who want to get involved in a friendly surfing competition. We can all learn from the enthusiasm that they bring to the beach, it's contagious”, said Nyles Schafhauser, President of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.

Proceeds from the contest help fund several of the organization's ongoing charity outreach programs including the Ronald McDonald House and the Doheny State Park Interpretive Center, located at Doheny State Beach.

The Menehune Championships has a long history of supporting charities, in addition to providing a fun-filled day at the beach for participants and observers alike. The event will feature auctions, raffles and music throughout the day with an awards ceremony following the end of the competition. Nyles Schafhauser further states, “Surfing is all about having fun. We hope that kids will cherish their time spent on the beach with their fellow surfing friends and families.”

Surfers will compete in 15 minute heats. The scoring is based on a 10-point system that integrates wave selection, length of ride, surfing moves and style. Judges are all Doheny Longboard members who have a long history of working within this type of scoring system.

Some of LeRoy Grannis's surfing memorabilia and other sentimental items were stolen late Thursday night on 4/1/10. LeRoy's son, John Grannis had his business in Redondo broken into and a safe stolen.

It’s amazing how many times I have driven the road to San O and never once gave it a thought as to what Basilone road was named after.

I did a little research and found out the following:

Basilone Road is named after a Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945). He was a United States Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. He was the only enlisted Marine in World War II to receive the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. His story will be told during the new TV series called The Pacific.
A section of U.S. Interstate 5 running through Camp Pendleton is named the "Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone Memorial Highway".

San Onofre State Park officials last week found a North American beaver at the river mouth of the San Mateo Creek near Trestles.
According to State Parks officials, the animal was once a native species to the San Mateo Creek area, but were thought to be nearly extinct in the area.
Officials speculate that the animal may be related to a small population of beaver, which was re-introduced to the Santa Margarita watershed by the Department of Fish and Game in the 1940s to help with erosion control.
Since then, the beavers have migrated to nearby creeks and watersheds in the area, including those in the Cleveland National Forest and San Mateo Creek.
State Parks officials are unclear where this specific beaver originally came from, but they are sure it resided in the one of the streams that flows into the San Mateo Creek.
San Mateo Creek has been the site of a battle between the Surfrider Foundation and other environmental groups, and the Transportation Cooridor Agencies, which sought to build a toll road through the area.
“This discovery supports our assertion that the San Mateo Creek has a thriving watershed ecosystem that deserves the highest level of protection from its source in the mountains to the ocean,” says Mark Rauscher, Surfrider Foundation’s Assistant Environmental Director.

The first ever Mickey Munoz Paddle Surf Fiesta – Mongoose Cup will be held March 13, 2010 at Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor. Please join Mickey and his friends for a day of paddling fun, camaraderie and delicious BBQ. The event will directly benefit the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association (DSBIA).

As part of the Dana Point Festival of Whales, The Mickey Muñoz Paddle Surf Fiesta will begin with a Fun Paddle around Dana Point Harbor Island. The Fun Paddle will be launched after a vital “Rules of the Road” paddling safety meeting is conducted by officials from Dana Point Harbor and the Orange County Sherriff Department’s Harbor Patrol.

“With the explosion of stand-up paddle boarding there are a lot more people paddling in the harbor. Safety and etiquette have become much more critical. Since Dana Point has become a Mecca for paddle sports, we wanted to have an event that’s message is about the importance of water safety and paddling etiquette” says surf legend Mickey Munoz.

“The County of Orange has always been on the cutting edge of boater safety and education and given the fact that Dana Point Harbor is a natural location for beginners on any type of human powered vessel it was obvious to us that we would introduce a common sense and easy to understand public program to ensure all the water enthusiast have the basic information to improve their safety while enjoying our Harbor and the local off shore waters." from Brad Gross, Director of Dana Point Harbor.

At the conclusion of the Fun Paddle, participants will be organized into relay teams that will race for the inaugural Mongoose Cup. Each SUP four (4) person relay team will be required to have one female, one senior (50 & over) and either one junior (16 & under) or intermediate paddler on their respective teams. The start and finish for the flat-water race will be at Baby Beach. To be eligible for the Mongoose Cup teams must race 12’6” & under SUP boards.

The Mickey Munoz Paddle Surf Fiesta – Mongoose Cup is an event open to everyone. The Fun Paddle is open to any type of paddling craft and the Mongoose Cup will be contested solely as a stand-up paddleboard race. The entry fee is $40 and participants will receive a commemorative Dana Point Festival of the Whales tee shirt, “Rules of the Road” safety decal, delicious BBQ lunch and chance to paddle with surf legend Mickey Munoz. Event registration will open Saturday morning March 13 at 7:30 a.m. The Fun Paddle will start at 9:00 a.m. Entry forms can be downloaded at dpfestivalofwhales.com and dohosurf.org.

About Mickey Munoz
Mickey Munoz, born in New York City in 1937, is an early pioneer of surfing and well-known surfboard shaper. Once described as the “surfer’s surfer”, Mickey has been riding waves since the 1950s and has been featured in many popular surfing films and documentaries. Winning the first professional surf contest and pioneering big wave surfing at Waimea Bay are a few of Mickey’s surfing accomplishments. Munoz was the stunt double for Sandra Dee in the 1959 teen film Gidget and he developed an iconic surf stance that became known as the "quasimoto". Mickey currently lives in Capistrano Beach, CA with his wife Peggy and is an avid stand-up paddler (SUP).

While the eastern half of America suffered through a week-long historic arctic blast, Southern California enjoyed one of its best winter weekends yet. The 14th annual Gathering of The Tribes surf contest not only had perfect weather, but incredible waves as well.
Perhaps legendary surfer Henry Ford said it best, “We are blessed to be here, together we are enjoying what California is all about. It’s the perfect combination of friends and waves”.
The classic winter event is the annual kick-off program of the Coalition of Longboard Surf Clubs competitive season. With four to seven foot waves at Church Beach, one of California’s premiere point breaks, the almost flawless conditions provided an exceptional beginning to this year’s season. The surfing was inspired to say the least.
The contest featured a little bit of everything, from short boarding, stand up paddle surfing (SUP), longboarding, and tandem surfing. There was not a heat where someone surfing did not get an applause or big cheer from the beach.
The weekend program kicked off Friday evening at the Surfing Heritage Foundation where the Doheny Club donated a thousand dollars to the Foundation to help further its goals in preserving the history and culture of surfing. The Coalition of Surfing Clubs (CSC) is an international organization that represents the interests of surfing clubs throughout California and the world. It acts as a united voice to address issues related to coastal water quality, beach access, development, and legislative policy. VW bus stolen 35 years ago is found in shipping container bound for Europe
Customs agents inspecting a load bound for the Netherlands discovered a 1965 van that disappeared from a Spokane repair shop in 1974. CHP investigators are searching for the thieves.

The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s 20th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau is now in the record books. The event featured everything from classic longboarding, to breathtaking tandem to the newer Stand Up Paddle (SUP) competition and more. Several inspired performances and great last minute clutch surfing capped off the one day event.

The men’s 20 to 29 age group featured over-the-top surfing from both Max Dexter and Bucky Barry of Dana Point who demonstrated incredible style and maneuvers in the smallish but fun surf. Dexter eventually won out over Barry - each showed incredible sportsmanship.

This year’s event consisted of two competitive surfing areas that were judged simultaneously by two separate judging stations. The configuration enabled SUP surfing and Tandem divisions to surf and work their way to the finals in the afternoon.

The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association has held the Dale Velzy event for 20 years at Doheny State Beach and it is one of the most cherished events of the club’s year long schedule. This year’s program was no exception. Nyle Schafhauser, Doheny Longboard Club President, stated,” This year’s event was especially exciting because we were able to add a SUP division that showed just how far the sport has come with their exceptional wave surfing abilities. Plus, we love to pay homage to the great Dale Velzy every year as a remembrance to all the great things he did for surfing”.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment.
